According to HotHardware, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated in a CNBC interview that the gaming industry is “moving towards PC, and business is moving toward open rather than closed.” He clarified that rich, immersive gaming experiences on big screens aren’t going away, but the platform landscape is evolving. Zelnick previously revealed that PC can account for 40% or more of Grand Theft Auto game sales, making it a crucial revenue stream. Despite this, there’s still no official PC port announcement for GTA 6, and a simultaneous console-PC launch seems unlikely. The recent delay to 2025 might affect timing, but industry trends strongly point toward an eventual PC release.
The PC Gaming Momentum
Here’s the thing – when the CEO of Rockstar’s parent company keeps emphasizing PC’s importance, you should probably listen. Zelnick isn’t just making casual observations here. He’s basically describing a strategic shift that aligns with the numbers. PC accounting for 40% of GTA sales? That’s massive revenue they’re leaving on the table by delaying PC releases.
The Porting Problem
But let’s not get too excited about a quick turnaround. Remember Red Dead Redemption 2? That took over a year to come to PC despite targeting x86 architecture on PS4. Now, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles are even closer to PC architecture, which should theoretically speed things up. But GTA 6 is reportedly the most expensive game ever made – we’re talking about an incredibly complex project that might need extra polishing for PC.
Platform Convergence
Zelnick’s comments about “open rather than closed” systems are particularly interesting given current hardware trends. With devices like Steam Deck and rumors about next-gen Xbox essentially being Windows machines, the lines are blurring fast. Could Rockstar eventually develop one version that works across Xbox and PC simultaneously? That would be a game-changer for release schedules.
Patience Required
So when should we expect GTA 6 on PC? Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. The business case is absolutely there – Zelnick himself keeps pointing to those 40% PC sales numbers. But Rockstar has traditionally used staggered releases to maximize revenue from each platform. They might double-dip again, selling to console players first, then PC gamers later. Still, given how much closer current consoles are to PC architecture, I’d be surprised if we’re waiting as long as we did for Red Dead 2. Maybe six to nine months? Here’s hoping.
